Staff Accountant, Catapult Headquarters

Matt Hummel, Number Cruncher

Matt Hummel is a numbers guy. He’s all about digging into details to find profits, tamp down costs, and find out where the money goes.

Matt is a staff accountant at Catapult’s corporate office. He started as an intern in January 2007 and was hired full-time that June after graduating with a degree in Finance from George Mason University.

While he’s currently in accounting, Matt wants to move to the finance side of things. What’s the difference, you ask?

“Finance is learning how to make money with money,” he says. It’s about understanding real world expenditures and making sense of balance sheets, income statements, and financial management.

Matt’s everyday job is to financially manage Catapult’s projects. He works with contracting officers, project managers, and corporate executives to keep things on track.

“Every project is different,” he says, and that brings some excitement and uncertainty to his daily routine.

When he began his full-time position with Catapult, Matt took over from another employee and had to jump in to their work processes in order to figure out the next steps. That involved some investigating and sifting through records, but that process allowed him to really understand what he was dealing with. Figuring out what was missing let him also know where to go next.

Matt is a Washington DC-area native, who grew up and still lives in Fairfax, VA. He’s an athlete who enjoys the gym, playing basketball, and running. He’s drawn to the water—whether working toward his dream of owning a boat or just pursuing his love for hanging out at the Georgetown waterfront (but only when the weather’s good). His favorite vacation spots have also been centered on the water: Puerto Rico, Florida, and Jamaica.

Matt enjoys both his coworkers and the security that a spot in a growing company provides. “It adds up to be a great place to work,” he says.
